Increasing upload_max_filesize

It may happen that files are not uploaded during - for example - the import of products, because the file is too large. Luckily we can increase the upload_max_filesize within WordPress and in this article we are going to explain 4 methods.

Retrieve current upload_max_filesize

To increase the upload_max_filesize, we first have to retrieve the current size from WordPress. To do this, go to Media > New file in the backend of your WordPress website. Below the button Select file it says 'Maximum file size: 19 MB'.

We now know that the maximum file size should be configured higher than 19 MB.

This is how you increase the upload_max_filesize

1) .htaccess

You can increase the upload_max_filesize through your .htaccess file. You can find this file via your FTP server at the root folder of your WordPress website. Did you find this file? Then add the code below.

php_value upload_max_filesize 64M

2) php.ini

Another option is to add the code below to the php.ini file. You can also find this on your FTP server at the root folder of your WordPress website. If the file does not yet exist - which is usually the case - then you can create it yourself and add it to the root folder of your WordPress website.

upload_max_filesize = 64M

wp-config.php

Of course we can also use the wp-config.php for this change. You can also find this in the root folder of your WordPress website on your FTP server. Add the code below to the wp-config.php file to increase the maximum file size.

@ini_set( ‘upload_max_size’ , ‘100M’ );

functions.php

You have probably already guessed it, this file can also be found in the root folder of your WordPress website on the server. Add the code below to increase the upload_max_filesize.

@ini_set( 'upload_max_size', '64M');

Are you stuck?

It is possible that your hosting provider dominates the upload_max_filesize, which will result in that none of the above methods work. In that case you should contact your hosting provider.
